Tapa cloth

Tapa: we offer round and rectangular shaped tapa decorations.
Tapa can be used as wall or table decorations.

Tapa cloth is made from bark and is produced in the South Pacific. Tapa is given at special occasions like births, weddings and as a high quality present. Tapa is used for decoration, handbags, purses and other useful products like blankets.

A complex technique is involved in producing Tapa cloth. The basic material is, primarily, the bark of the paper-mulberry tree which is striped from the trees. The inner bark is scraped off and dried in the sun before being soaked. These strips of bark are approximately 25 cm wide and 150 cm long. After soaking, the bark is beaten on a wooden anvil. During beating the bark gets thinner and wider. The resultant strips are either glued together or several of them are taken and beaten together into a large sheet.

The cloth is then painted in traditional patterns, usually black or brown, using stencils. In previous times stencils were made from banana leaves whereas, nowadays, plastic stencils are used. Each region has its own traditional pattern.

Care instructions Tapa cloth is a natural product and should be displayed or stored in a dry place. It should be protected from humidity. If the tapa cloth becomes wet it should be dried as soon as possible. Please do not store while damp as mould may appear.

The designs on the delivered product may differ from the designs displayed on the website. Each Tapa is unique so it is almost impossible to reproduce it exactly.
