Success Stories

One example is Jack and his wife, Sana, who are farmers in Fiji. Jack was able to produce five tons of copra and he earned less than $US 750. Copra is dried coconut flesh that is often unhealthily handled and stored. High temperatures are necessary to extract the oil and this oil has to be refined to obtain a clean product. The copra production is centralized and is a large scale operation carried out in metropolitan areas. The local farmers are unable to participate and can not gain much profit from the copra production. During the following year the copra price increased on the world market and Jack would have been able to earn $US 1250. The local production of DME Oil made it possible for him to earn $US 3350 and establish his family business and share his income with his family.
